The above mentioned ways of treating Social Anxiety Disorder are indeed the most common and most recognized.
However, it might be interesting to know that there are several other options as well.
I’d like to give you two more options for treatment.
One that is gaining more popularity is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
It helps you to change your relationship with painful thoughts and feelings.
ACT assists you in uncovering your core values; the things in life that are important to you that motivate, guide and inspire you.
It teaches you to be in the present moment and to “just notice” and accept your reactions to the situation. And it then teaches you to ACT. To take action in alignment with your core values.
Now this might seem impossible for you, to just deal with the feelings and accept it.
That’s why ACT teaches you mindfulness skills to deal with the painful thoughts and feelings.
These mindfulness skills teach you to:
•Distance yourself from negative thoughts and emotions and let them go
•Accept your painful thoughts and emotions and allow them to show up and then let them go without getting wrapped up in them. It basically teaches you to stop fighting them and just notice them, accept them and let them go away again.
•Be present and have an open and curious attitude
Once you get good at these mindfulness skills you can more easily activate your “observing self”.
“What is my observing self?!”
Well, you basically have the part of your brain that is always thinking; the thinking brain. It is responsible for all your thoughts, beliefs, judgments, memories, fantasies etc.
And then you have the part of your brain that is the “observing self”. It is the part of you that can step outside of the thinking part and then observe what it’s doing. It has the ability to notice whatever you are thinking and feeling in the moment.
When you are in the “observing self” mode, negative thoughts and feelings have way less impact and influence over you. You are merely observing them and you are not wrapped up and overwhelmed by them. This allows you to make the right decisions according to your values.
So this social anxiety treatment helps you to ACT.
This is an interesting approach. However,
THE BEST AND MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF SOCIAL ANXIETY TREATMENT…
…is in my opinion Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
EFT is a psychological form of acupuncture. But in EFT there are no needles involved. Instead, you use our fingertips to tap on specific meridian points on your body.
It’s a funky looking technique and it looks pretty dumb. Which makes it very difficult for people to believe that it actually works. But it’s extremely effective.
The premise of EFT is that “the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”
And when you tap on specific meridian points on your body while being focused in on your “problem”, the disruption in your energy system gets balanced out and due to that the negative emotions disappears.
I know, you now probably think I lost it…
…Or that I’m some weird airy-fairy woo-woo guy that believes in ghosts and fairy tales.
But seriously, this weird technique is an amazing form of social anxiety treatment. In fact, I believe it to be the most effective form of social anxiety treatment out there.
I was very skeptical in the beginning myself as well, but I have applied it to myself successfully, have undergone training and have healed over a hundred people of several different emotional issues.
I have now specialized myself in helping people overcome their social phobia via skype coaching.
