I don’t think anyone doubts the necessity and benefits of sleep. What worries me is that it has become a medical issue. Insomnia for the most part is not a disease but a symptom. It is important to understand the message of the symptom – not shoot the messenger with ever increasing doses of sleep-medication. That was brought home to me by reading Gayle Greene’s book :Insomniac. For a workbook about enabling sleep again without the use of drugs, try: Siegfried Haug: I Want to Sleep – Unlearning Insomnia.
